Coffee Roastery Modus
Although lacking traditional certifications Coffee Roasters Modus has their own Source+ program that prioritizes fair pay as well as empowering communities in dire situations, such as the Escobal Mine situation Mataquescuintla, Guatemala . Around half of coffee sold is grown in shade grown plantations, and nearly 100% of coffee is organic. All coffee is roasted in-house. They have many vegan options for snacks on their menu, and all of their non-coffee food offerings are locally sourced. All non-coffee drinks are made in house or from local companies.
Packaging
Cups are made from fully compostable paper, and cup lids are made from recycled plastic. Straws are made from biodegradable material, and, disregarding COVID, reusables are encouraged and discounts are given to people who brought in reusable cups for coffee
Facility
Proper insulation is used to retain heat in plumbing. A majority of lighting is done using EnergyStar rated LED lightbulbs. All lights are turned off upon closing. Around half of all soaps and cleaning products are nontoxic.
Disposal
Methods are put in place to reduce beverage and food waste. Trash is separated into compost, glass recycling, plastics recycling, and unrecyclable trash. Lightbulbs and batteries are disposed of responsibly.
Community
Coffee Roasters Modus donates regularly to Hogan’s Alley Society, the NAACP, and BLM initiatives. They partly encourage their staff to make sustainable decisions. Most of their staff walks or bikes to work, and some take public transit or an electric car.
